The Law Commission of India recently recommended the dilution of Anti Dowry Law:

Deal for Mirage 2000 aircraft fleet:

India on January 4, cleared a € 950 million deal to procure 500 air-to-air missiles from a French firm MBDA. The missiles will be deployed on Indian Air Force's 51 Mirage 2000 aircraft fleet which are already undergoing upgrades at a French facilities under a € 1-47 billion deal signed earlier.

The 99th Indian Science Congress was recently held in Bhubaneshwar:

The 99th Indian Science Congress was held in Bhubaneshwar the focal theme of which was—Science and Technology for Inclusive Innovation Role of Women. The Congress was inaugurated by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on January 3, 2012 at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneshwar (Odisha).

The second nuclear submarine of India headed for year-end launch is INS Andaman:

The construction of a second Arihant class nuclear submarine to be named INS Andaman is moving fast at the Ship Building Centre (SBC) in Vishakhapatnam. It is slated for launch by this year end or in the first quarter of next year in 2013.

The Union Cabinet has approved National Policy on NDPS:

The Union Cabinet of India on January 12, 2012 approved the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Policy-with the objective of checking of illicit production of psychotropic substances, curb drug abuse and stop trafficking of such items. It aims at social re-integration of victims of drug abuse.

The Government has launched NACO's Red Ribbon Express Phase III:

Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad on January 12, 2012 launched the National AIDS Control Organisation's Red Ribbon Express Phase-Ill in New Delhi. The train aims at mass awareness about AIDS control by particularly focussing on micro-planning with exhibition and folk troupes.

India and China, in January 2012 resumed their 15 round of boundary talks:

The 15th round of India-China Special Representatives Talks on Boundary Issue was held in January 2012. The India side was led by National Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon while Chinese side was headed by State Councillor Dai Bingguo. Both sides, at the conclusion of the meeting, agreed to set up a working mechanism on boundary question between the two countries.

India celebrated its First Polio Free Year on 13th January, 2012:

On January 13, 2012 India reached a major milestone in the history of polio eradication—a year without any case of wild polio disease being recorded. During the 12 month milestone in India the last case of polio was
reported was that of a two year old girl in West Bengal on January 13, 2011.

42% of underweight (malnourished) children younger than five in India: 

Forty-two per cent of children in India younger than 5 are underweight and nearly 60 per cent are stunned. The Hunger and Malnutrition Survey monitored over 1,00,000 children in 112 districts across nine states in the country from October 2010 to February 2011 revealed this fact. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh released the report in January 2011.

UN Climate Change Conference in Durban: The 17th Conference of Parties (COP 17) to the United Nations Framework Convention of Climate Change(UNFCCC) concluded in Durban (South Africa) on December 11, 2011 in which the parties, after extended negotiations, agreed on the second commitment under Kyoto Protocol (2005) by adopting 'The Durban Platform'—a set of decisions that lay the ground for adopting a legal agreement on climate change as soon as possible, and not later than 2015.

Davis Cup, Tennis: Rafael Nadal ensured victory for Spain in the Davis Cup final (tennis) in Seville (Spain) on December 4, 2011after he defeated Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro in four sets. It was Nadal's 20th straight victory. It was Spain's fifth victory in Davis Cup final.

Egyptian Parliamentary elections: Islamist parties won 70% of parliamentary posts in Egypt's first and second of three rounds of national elections in November-December 2011 with Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party and the fundamentalist al-Nour Party gaining hugely in these two phases.

Virender Sehwag: Virender Sehwag (of India) on December 8, 2011 created history by becoming the highest scorer with his stupendous 219 runs off 149 balls in a One-Day inning in the fourth ODI against the West Indies in Indore. He is the second cricketer after Sachin Tendulkar to score a double century and surpassed his record of 200 (not out) against South Africa in February 2010.


Russian Parliamentary elections: Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's United Russia secured absolute majority by gaining 238 out of 450seats in the new State Duma (the lower house of Parliament) in parliamentary elections held in December 2011. The ruling United Russia, which gained 49-32 per cent of votes, lost a constitutional majority but kept an absolute majority in the new State Duma.

India Registered Lowest Growth in Last Two Years: The tremors of eurozone debt crisis have started impacting exports in India which registered 10-8% growth at $ 19-8 billion in October 2011—the lowest in the last two years since October 2009 when it contracted by 6-6 per cent.

Union Cabinet Cleared Lokpal Bill Draft: The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh cleared the Lokpal Bill on December 20, 2011 with the provision of group C and D employees coming under it while Central Bureau of Investigation will remain with Department of Personnel and Training. The Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on December 27,2011.

Sunil Chetri-AIFF Player of the year: Sunil Chetri who played 17 international matches and scored 13 goals in 2011 has been named the All India Football Federation's Player of the year 2011—It is the highest recognition for an Indian footballer and has been received by Sunil Chetri for the second time first time in 2007.

Dam 999 has made it to the Oscars Eligibility List:  The controversial film Dam 999, (banned in Tamil Nadu) depicting collapse of dam has made it to the list of 265 films that are eligible for Best Picture Oscar at the 2011 Academy Awards. In addition its three songs have also been selected for the Academy's Original Songs Category.

Presidential Fleet Review 2011: President Pratibha Patil reviewed a fleet of 81 warships and 44 aircraft—the largest ever turnout of Indian Navy ships at the 10th Presidential Fleet Review (2011)—which is carried out once in the term of each President. The event was held off the Mumbai Coast on December 20, 2011 in which 81 warships including INS Viraat, (India's lone aircraft carrier), Shivalak and Talwar class frigates and 10 vessels of the Coast Guard were on display.

World's Shortest Living Woman : An Indian student Jyoti Amge measuring just 62-8 centimetre was on December 16, 2011 confirmed as the World's shortest living woman in the Guinness World Records. She is 18 year old

Mullaperiyar Dam: The Dam which has recently been a bone of contention between Tamil Nadu and Kerala is Mullaperiyar Dam .The Mullaperiyar Dam—a masonry gravity dam—is located on the Periyar river in Kerala but it is controlled and operated under a period lease by Tamil Nadu. The control and safety of the dam and the validity and fairness of the lease agreement signed in 1886 for 999 years again recently became the points of disputes between these two states.

Indian History Congress held at Patiala: The 72nd session of Indian History Congress was held in Patiala (Punjab) in second week of December 2011.The congress, inaugurated by Vice-President Hamid Ansari on December 10, 2011, also marked its PlatinumJubilee Celebration. India successfully flight tested Nag Missile: In a breakthrough in indigenous seeker technology for missiles, an RF (Radio Frequency) seeker was successfully flight-tested in anti-tank Nag missile in the Army ranges at Ahmednagar in Rajasthan on December 11,2011. It was for the first time that a millimetric wave (mm W) seeker, having all weather capability was tried for 2,000 metre range in a successful mission.

Porfirio adjudged Best film award at IFFI: The Colombian movie 'Porfirio' directed by Mr. Alejandro Landes was adjudged the Best Film and thus won the Golden Peacock Award at the 42nd International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2011 which ended in second week of December 2011 in Panaji (Goa).

National Counter Terrorism Center: The Government of India is seriously planning to create a National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) after the high-level committee headed by National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon recently favoured the creation of NCTC as an executive body within the existing framework for anti-terror operations in the country.

India in December 2011 successfully tested AEW&C System: The first fully modified aircraft for the indigenously developed Indian Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AEW&C) undertook its maiden flight on December 5, 2011 at the facilities of the manufacturer at Sao Jose dos Compos in Brazil with about 1000 Mission System Components provided by the Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS) of Defence Research Development Organisation.

Ajit Wadekar adjudged C.K Nayadu Lifetime Achievement Award: Under the BCCI annual awards 2010-11 Ajit Wadekar who led India to its maiden series in the West Indies and England in 1971 was honoured with prestigious Col. C. K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award at BCCI Awards function in Chennai on December 10, 2011.
