A new gene called Meg-1 was discovered in maize plants by the UK scientists on January 16, 2012. The gene could increase the crop yields by regulating the transfer of nutrients from the plants to the seed.

US beverage maker Coca Cola retained its top position in interbrand's list of the top 100 global brands in 2011. Coca Cola was followed by another US based company IBM. Software Company Microsoft was placed at third.

Memogate scandal is related to Pakistan

The memogate scandal is related to a memorandum delivered by Pakistani-American businessman Mansoor Ajaz to the Pentagon officials asking for US help to thwart a feared coup in Pakistan. Ajiz accused Husain Haqqani former Pak envoy to USA of crafting the memo with President's Asif Ali Zardari's support. The Russian Mars Probe which recently fell in Indian Ocean is Phobos-Grunt

Russia's stricken Mars probe, Phobos-Grunt fell into the Indian Ocean West of Indonesia on January 15, 2012 after its launch on November 9, 2011 the Probe became stuck in Earth Orbit and all attempts to communicate with it failed. Scientists predicted that about 20 to 30 fragments with a total weight of less than 200 kg might survive the fiery descent.


India and China have agreed to develop World's Largest Telescope

China and India have decided to join as partners in building a Hawaii telescope which will be the world's largest. The Thirty Meter Telescope's segmented primary will nearly be 100 feet or 30 metres long. The construction cost, expected to top $ 1 billion, for the telescope will be shared by India and China. They will also have a share of the observation time.

Standard and Poor's has downgraded the credit rating of Nine Member Countries of Euro zone  

Standard and Poor's downgraded the credit ratings of nine euro zone countries but not European Union paymaster Germany (the bloc's largest economy) in January 2012. Cyprus, Italy, Portugal and Spain were lowered by two notches from AAA tag to single. A status whereas Austria, France, Malta, Slovakia and Slovenia were lowered by one notch from AAA tage to AA+ level.

Parliamentary elections in Kazakhstan  

Kazakhstan ruling party—Nur Otan of President Nursultan Nazarbayev—has swept snap parliamentary elections winning 80-79% of the vote in the elections held in January 2012.

NASA probes which have entered  Lunar Orbit

The NASA Lunar probes—the Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL-A and GRAIL-B) went into the Lunar orbit in December 2011-January 2012. The $ 500 million pair of washing machine sized Satellites launched in September 2011 on a mission to map the Moon's inner core have begun orbiting the Moon.

Youngest sailor to complete a Solo Circumnavigation of the World

Dutch teenager Laura Dekker on January 21, 2012 became the youngest sailor to complete a solo circumnavigation of the world. The 16 year old Dekker sailed into harbour on the Caribbean Island of St. Martin. She left the Island on September 20, 2011 and surpassed the previous record by eight months.

Rajasthan is the winner of 78th Ranji Trophy Championship:

Rajasthan won its second consecutive Ranji Trophy title (cricket) by defeating Tamil Nadu in Chennai on January 23, 2012 on the basis of its mammoth 326-run lead in first innings.

India has been ranked Sixth most innovative country in the world:

India was ranked the sixth most innovative country in the world in multinational conglomerate GE's second Annual Global Innovation Barometer published on January 18, 2012. The report is based on a survey of 2,800 Senior Business Executives in 22 countries and identifies the top enablers for innovation in the country.

The Law Commission of India recently recommended the dilution of Anti Dowry Law:

The Law Commission of India headed by P.V. Reddy recommended to the Government to make section 498-A of the Indian Penal Code which deals with harassment for dowry and cruelty to woman in her matrimonial home a compoundable offence to be compromised by the parties to the dispute. India has cleared ambitious missiles

Deal for Mirage 2000 aircraft fleet:

India on January 4, cleared a € 950 million deal to procure 500 air-to-air missiles from a French firm MBDA. The missiles will be deployed on Indian Air Force's 51 Mirage 2000 aircraft fleet which are already undergoing upgrades at a French facilities under a € 1-47 billion deal signed earlier.

This year K.G. Subramanyan (Art-painting and sculpture), Late Mario de Miranda (Art Cartoonist), Late Bhupen Hazarika (Art-Vocal Music) Dr. Kantilal Hastimal Sancheti, (Medicine-Orthopedics), and T.V. Rajeshwar (Civil Service) have been selected for Padma Vibhushan—the second highest civilian award of India.

Navdeep Singh was decorated with Ashok Chakra posthumously:

Lieutenant Navdeep Singh of the Army who killed four terrorists before laying down his life in Jammu and Kashmir in August 2011 was awarded the Ashok Chakra—the highest peacetime gallantry award posthumously on Republic Day January 26, 2012.

The 99th Indian Science Congress was recently held in Bhubaneshwar:

The 99th Indian Science Congress was held in Bhubaneshwar the focal theme of which was—Science and Technology for Inclusive Innovation Role of Women. The Congress was inaugurated by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on January 3, 2012 at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneshwar (Odisha).

The second nuclear submarine of India headed for year-end launch is INS Andaman:

The construction of a second Arihant class nuclear submarine to be named INS Andaman is moving fast at the Ship Building Centre (SBC) in Vishakhapatnam. It is slated for launch by this year end or in the first quarter of next year in 2013.

The Union Cabinet has approved National Policy on NDPS:

The Union Cabinet of India on January 12, 2012 approved the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Policy-with the objective of checking of illicit production of psychotropic substances, curb drug abuse and stop trafficking of such items. It aims at social re-integration of victims of drug abuse.

The Government has launched NACO's Red Ribbon Express Phase III:

Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad on January 12, 2012 launched the National AIDS Control Organisation's Red Ribbon Express Phase-Ill in New Delhi. The train aims at mass awareness about AIDS control by particularly focussing on micro-planning with exhibition and folk troupes.

India and China, in January 2012 resumed their 15 round of boundary talks:

The 15th round of India-China Special Representatives Talks on Boundary Issue was held in January 2012. The India side was led by National Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon while Chinese side was headed by State Councillor Dai Bingguo. Both sides, at the conclusion of the meeting, agreed to set up a working mechanism on boundary question between the two countries.

India celebrated its First Polio Free Year on 13th January, 2012:

On January 13, 2012 India reached a major milestone in the history of polio eradication—a year without any case of wild polio disease being recorded. During the 12 month milestone in India the last case of polio was
reported was that of a two year old girl in West Bengal on January 13, 2011.

42% of underweight (malnourished) children younger than five in India: 

Forty-two per cent of children in India younger than 5 are underweight and nearly 60 per cent are stunned. The Hunger and Malnutrition Survey monitored over 1,00,000 children in 112 districts across nine states in the country from October 2010 to February 2011 revealed this fact. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh released the report in January 2011.

UN Climate Change Conference in Durban: The 17th Conference of Parties (COP 17) to the United Nations Framework Convention of Climate Change(UNFCCC) concluded in Durban (South Africa) on December 11, 2011 in which the parties, after extended negotiations, agreed on the second commitment under Kyoto Protocol (2005) by adopting 'The Durban Platform'—a set of decisions that lay the ground for adopting a legal agreement on climate change as soon as possible, and not later than 2015.

Davis Cup, Tennis: Rafael Nadal ensured victory for Spain in the Davis Cup final (tennis) in Seville (Spain) on December 4, 2011after he defeated Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro in four sets. It was Nadal's 20th straight victory. It was Spain's fifth victory in Davis Cup final.

Russian Parliamentary elections: Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's United Russia secured absolute majority by gaining 238 out of 450seats in the new State Duma (the lower house of Parliament) in parliamentary elections held in December 2011. The ruling United Russia, which gained 49-32 per cent of votes, lost a constitutional majority but kept an absolute majority in the new State Duma.
